Mtskheta, the ancient capital of eastern Georgia and is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the holiest place in Georgia.
Gori was an important military stronghold in the Middle Ages and maintains a strategic importance due to its location on the principal highway connecting eastern and western parts of Georgia. The city was occupied by Russian troops during the 2008 South Ossetian War.
Gori is also known as the birthplace of the Soviet leader Joseph Stalin.
Uplistsikhe ("fortress of God"-1st millennium B.C.), is a very interesting complex of rock-cut halls, caves, altars, passages and streets, and includes the most ancient theatre in Georgia.
